Frequently asked questions for structural surveys in Surrey

Updated: Sep 20

About Surveys

Q: Which type of survey do I need?

A: It depends on your situation. A Specific Structural Inspection focuses on one or two issues (e.g. subsidence investigations, cracking or damp). A General Structural Survey reviews the main structural elements of the property. A RICS Level 3 Survey is a comprehensive survey covering the entire building in detail. A Full Structural Survey is the most comprehensive, covering the entire building in detail and also giving detailed structural advice. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll guide you to the right option.

Q: How long does a survey take?

A: A typical inspection lasts 2–4 hours depending on the size and complexity of the property. Very complex or large properties can take 7 hours or more. The written report is usually delivered within 5–10 working days.

Q: What’s included in the report?

A: Clear explanations of findings, supporting photographs, cause analysis, and practical recommendations for next steps. Our reports are written in plain English, with technical detail where required.

Q: Do you inspect flats and maisonettes?

A: Yes. However, for flats we focus mainly on the internal parts and visible external elements affecting the property. Full structural inspections are more suitable for houses.

Costs & Booking

Q: How much does a survey cost?

A: A structural survey cost will vary depending on the survey type. A Specific Structural Inspection typical starts from £650.00 although this can vary depending on the issue with a Full Structural Survey is from £1,500, see https://www.harveysstructuralsurveys.co.uk/prices for further details.

Q: Do you require payment upfront?

A: Yes, payment is due at the time of booking to secure your inspection slot. We offer payment by debit or credit card via our booking form.

Q: How soon can you inspect my property?

A: We can often arrange inspections within 5–10 working days, subject to availability.

Insurance & Subsidence

Q: Can you help with subsidence investigations?

A: Yes. We specialize in diagnosing subsidence, including tree-root related shrinkage and escape-of-water cases. Our reports are suitable for submission to insurers and loss adjusters.

Q: Will you liaise with my insurance company?

A: We provide independent reports that you can share directly with your insurer. We remain impartial, ensuring the advice is always in your best interests.
